VA Legislative Check-In
Presented by Marilyn Freeman
The Virginia General Assembly’s summer activity consists mainly of interim studies, commission meetings, and joint subcommittee work, since the regular session adjourns in spring. These meetings continue through June and often into July–September.
Key Summer Activities
Interim studies are the core of summer legislative work. They include topic‑specific commissions and joint subcommittees that meet to prepare for the next session.
Examples scheduled for June 2026 include:
-
Virginia Tribes Law Update Commission — June 3, 2026
-
Manufacturing Development Commission — June 9, 2026
-
Women’s Health Preventative Care Subcommittee — June 15, 2026
These meetings are open to the public and often live-streamed.
Public Engagement Opportunities
Summer is when citizens can most easily influence legislation because lawmakers are drafting bills. You can:
-
attend interim meetings
-
submit written comments
-
provide virtual testimony (when available)
-
meet with legislators in their districts
The most accurate, up‑to‑date source for summer meetings is the official Meeting Calendars & Schedules page: Virginia General Assembly Calendar. This page updates continuously with new interim meetings, cancellations, and livestream links. Meeting dates should be confirmed on the official site since schedules are subject to change.
Fun Fact: Soror Marcia “Cia” Price is the first Black woman to serve as Chair of the House Privileges and Elections Committee, the longest continuously operating legislative committee in the nation.
