VA General Assembly Check-In
Presented by Marilyn Freeman
The 2026 Virginia General Assembly is now in session!
In the Commonwealth of Virginia, the House of Delegates and the Senate are coequal bodies, meaning neither chamber has authority over the other. Any legislator in either chamber may introduce legislation for consideration. As a result, multiple bills addressing similar or identical issues may be introduced within the same chamber or across both chambers. When introduced in the same chamber, legislators may choose to collaborate on a single bill, though this is not required. When similar bills are introduced in opposite chambers, they are referred to as companion bills.
This year, there are hundreds of bills related to elections under consideration in both chambers.
These measures include, but are not limited to, legislation addressing absentee and in person voting timelines, electoral college oversight and election certification requirements, restoration of voting rights for incarcerated individuals, the use of altered or synthetic media in political advertising and associated penalties, voter registration standards, identification requirements, protections for election officials and volunteers, and the introduction of “super precincts” in densely populated areas.
-
Compiled brief summaries of some of these bills here.
-
Live streams and recordings of all committee meetings are available here.
Fun Fact: Soror Marcia “Cia” Price is the first Black woman to serve as Chair of the House Privileges and Elections Committee, the longest continuously operating legislative committee in the nation.
